Vs.: NERONI CLAVDIO DRVSO GERMANICO COS DESIG, drapierte Büste n. r. Rs.: Schild mit der Aufschrift EQVESTER / OR-DO / PRINCIPI / IVVENT, im Hintergrund Speer. H.-M. von Kaenel, Britannicus, Agrippina und Nero in Thrakien, SNR 63, 1984, S. 144 f. Typus A; Taf. 25,35; RIC 108; C. 99; BMC S. 195; BN 288. Grüne Patina, gutes ss Ex Coin Galleries, Mail Bid Sale 8, 2009, Nr. 4276. In AD 51 young Nero was elevated to princeps iuventutis. The Roman knights didn't miss the opportunity to donate a buckler and some silver lances to him. These objects are shown by this medaillon that repeats a similar motif on coins minted for C. and L. Caesar in the time of Augustus. The medaillon (not a sesterce, as it doesn't have S C) was probably minted in Rome by order and for account of the Roman knights and given away by them on the occasion of a feast in honour of Nero (cf. RIC). Nothing speaks in favour for von Kaenel's opinion that this medaillon was minted in Thracia or another place in the Balkans (cf. Britannicus, Agrippina Minor und Nero in Thrakien, SNR 63, 1984, 127-166). This piece is one of the finest ever sold! Estimate: 2500 EUR |  |
